Djibouti
Djibouti is a tiny country — barely larger than Massachusetts — perched at one of the most strategically critical points on earth: the Bab-el-Mandeb strait, where the Red Sea meets the Gulf of Aden, through which roughly 20% of the world's shipping passes. The Afar and Somali peoples have lived in this volcanic, desert environment for millennia. France colonized it as French Somaliland in 1884 and held it until independence in 1977. Today Djibouti hosts military bases from the United States, France, China, Japan, Italy, and Saudi Arabia — more foreign military installations per square mile than anywhere else on earth. Its economy runs largely on port fees and payments from these foreign bases. The population is 94% Muslim, drawn primarily from the Somali and Afar ethnic groups — two of the least-reached peoples in the world.

People live in Djibouti today in extreme heat — it is regularly among the hottest inhabited places on earth — in a tiny country where geopolitical importance masks deep poverty. The Afar and Somali peoples carry centuries of Islamic identity interwoven with tribal culture, and while a small Christian community exists among urban dwellers and expatriates, the indigenous Muslim population has almost no access to the gospel. The many foreign soldiers and workers who pass through Djibouti represent a curious reversal: the nations come to this land, yet its own people remain among the least reached. The country's volcanic, otherworldly landscape mirrors the spiritual one — dramatic, beautiful, and waiting.

Where the Nations Pass Through
Djibouti sits at one of the world's most trafficked crossroads — the Bab-el-Mandeb strait, through which 20% of global trade flows, where the armies of many nations keep watch. Pray that this extraordinary concentration of international presence would become a seed-bed: for Christian soldiers and workers stationed there to witness boldly, for diaspora believers passing through to plant the gospel, and for the church to find a foothold at the meeting point of the Red Sea and the world. "I will shake all nations, and what is desired by all nations will come, and I will fill this house with glory." (Haggai 2:7)
The Afar and Somali
Pray specifically for the Afar and Somali peoples of Djibouti — two of the least-reached ethno-linguistic groups on earth, carrying an Islamic identity that has remained almost entirely sealed from the gospel for centuries. Pray for workers willing to learn Afar and Somali, to move into these communities with patience and love, to earn the trust of tribal elders, and to find the persons of peace through whom God opens entire families to the Word. "How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them?" (Romans 10:14)
Speaking in the Night
In one of the hottest places on earth, people sleep under open skies in the cool of the night — and there, in the darkness, God can speak to any heart He chooses. Across East Africa and the Horn, there are growing testimonies of Somali and Afar Muslims meeting Jesus in vivid dreams and visions, awakening to seek out believers and Scripture. Pray fervently for this to multiply in Djibouti — for Jesus to appear to Afar and Somali men and women in the night, revealing His risen self, giving them peace that nothing in their waking life could explain. "And afterward, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your old men will dream dreams, your young men will see visions. Even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit." (Joel 2:28–29)
