Libya
Libya sits at the crossroads of Mediterranean North Africa — a land of extraordinary historical depth. The Phoenicians established trading posts along its coast, and in Roman times, Tripolitania became one of the most prosperous provinces in the empire. Leptis Magna, birthplace of the Emperor Septimius Severus, was the third city of the Roman world and is today one of the best-preserved Roman ruins on earth. The Arab conquest brought Islam in the 7th century, and Libya remained under Arab, Berber, Ottoman, and then Italian colonial rule until independence in 1951. Muammar Gaddafi's 1969 coup inaugurated 42 years of erratic one-man rule. His overthrow in the 2011 revolution left Libya fractured between rival militias and governments — a conflict that continues today, with rival administrations and armed factions controlling different parts of the country.

People live in Libya today in a country still without stable governance more than a decade after the revolution — where rival governments lay claim to authority, armed militias control territory, and economic conditions remain precarious despite Libya's oil wealth. Libya is 97% Muslim, and the Christian population consists almost entirely of Sub-Saharan African and Asian migrant workers. The native Libyan Arab and Berber populations have almost no access to the gospel and virtually no indigenous Christian witness. The chaos of conflict has made formal mission work nearly impossible, yet God has not abandoned this ancient land that once formed part of the early church's heartland.

Leptis Magna and the Ancient Church
Before Islam, North Africa was home to a thriving church — the region that produced Tertullian and Cyprian, that shaped Augustine, that sent missionaries across the empire. Libya's soil holds the remains of a Roman civilization that once knew the name of Jesus. Those stones remain while the church is gone. Pray for the gospel to return — for the descendants of this ancient land to once again hear the name of Christ spoken in their own language and tongue. "I will restore the fortunes of my people Israel; they shall rebuild the ruined cities and inhabit them." (Amos 9:14)
A Nation Between the Ruins
Libya has been pulled between rival factions since 2011 — two governments, dozens of militias, and a population weary of conflict and uncertainty. Pray for peace: for a just and stable government to emerge, for the rule of law to return, and for the conditions of peace to allow the gospel to move freely. Ask God to use this moment of disruption — when old certainties have collapsed — to make Libyan hearts receptive to the only foundation that does not crumble. "For he himself is our peace, who has made the two groups one and has destroyed the barrier, the dividing wall of hostility." (Ephesians 2:14)
A Way in the Wilderness
Libya's vast southern Sahara — one of the most remote stretches on earth — is home to Tuareg and Berber peoples who have lived for centuries beyond the reach of mission workers. But God speaks in deserts. Pray for Libyan men and women — in the cities of the coast and the vast silence of the south — to receive dreams and visions of the risen Christ. Ask God to do in Libya what He declared through the prophet: to make rivers in the wasteland, and a highway through the places no human messenger can yet go. "Behold, I am doing a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it? I will make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert." (Isaiah 43:19)
