Qatar
Qatar is a small peninsula jutting into the Persian Gulf that spent most of its history as a quiet backwater of fishing, pearl diving, and Bedouin herding. The discovery of oil in 1940 and then liquefied natural gas in the 1970s transformed it into one of the wealthiest nations per capita on earth virtually overnight. The Al Thani dynasty has ruled Qatar since the mid-19th century, and today the country is one of the Gulf's most globally engaged players — home to Al Jazeera, host of the 2022 FIFA World Cup, and a sophisticated foreign policy broker between rival regional powers. Qatar's native Qatari population makes up only around 12% of the total; the rest are migrant workers from South Asia, Southeast Asia, Africa, and the West, drawn by construction, domestic work, and professional employment. This demographic reality means that Qatar — despite being an Islamic state — hosts one of the world's most religiously diverse populations within its borders.

People live in Qatar today in a country where extraordinary wealth and global connection exist alongside a native Qatari population almost entirely closed to the gospel. Expatriate Christians — Filipino nurses, Indian engineers, African laborers, Western professionals — make up a significant portion of the population and can worship with some freedom. But Qatari Muslims themselves have almost no access to genuine gospel witness. The 2022 World Cup brought the gospel through believers from 180+ nations; the question is whether those seeds took root. Qatar's native citizens live in comfort and religious insularity that may be the hardest soil of all: not hostile, just deeply, quietly closed.

The World Comes to Qatar
Qatar hosts hundreds of thousands of migrant workers from every nation — Filipinos, Indians, Pakistanis, Sri Lankans, Africans — many of whom are committed Christians. The 2022 World Cup brought believers from over 180 nations to Qatari soil. Pray for this extraordinary concentration of international Christians to witness boldly to their Qatari employers and neighbors, and for Qataris — as travelers and globally connected thinkers — to encounter Christ through the people who serve them. "In him the whole building is joined together and rises to become a holy temple in the Lord." (Ephesians 2:21)
Oil, Wealth, and the Restless Heart
Qatar's extraordinary wealth has built world-class museums, universities, and stadiums, positioning it as a place of global cultural influence. Pray that this wealth would not insulate Qataris from the gospel, but that — as global travelers, media consumers, and intellectuals — they would encounter Christ through media, relationships, and the witness of believers in their midst. Ask God to cultivate in the Qatari heart the restlessness that no amount of wealth can quiet, and that only He can satisfy. "What good will it be for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul?" (Matthew 16:26)

Doha glitters at night — a skyline of improbable wealth rising from the desert. But in the darkness behind every window, God can speak. Pray for Qataris and migrant workers alike to receive dreams and visions of Jesus — the Light who outshines every skyline. Ask for the Spirit to move in this small nation where so many nations gather, turning an intersection of the world into a seed-bed for the gospel. "For God, who said, 'Let light shine out of darkness,' made his light shine in our hearts to give us the light of the knowledge of God's glory displayed in the face of Christ." (2 Corinthians 4:6)
